The highly-acclaimed Danny Elfman’s Music From the Films of Tim Burton concert tour finally arrived in Paris last weekend. This tour, which started at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2013, had already appeared in several European cities as well as in Los Angeles. Several performances took place at the famous Parisian venue Le Grand Rex on October 10, 11 and 12, and most of them were sold out. I was lucky to attend the one on the 10th at 9:30 PM.

The Danny Elfman’s Music From the Films of Tim Burton concert series celebrates over three decades of genius collaboration between composer Danny Elfman and movie director Tim Burton. Suites from the fifteen magical and inspiring scores were arranged on this occasion. In Paris, some fans went to the show costumed as their favourite characters from movies such as Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland, Sleepy Hollow or The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The concert featured the Lamoureux orchestra and choir, led by renowned conductor John Mauceri. Violonist Sandy Cameron offered an electrifying solo performance during the Edwards Scissorhands suite, and a talented boy soprano sang during the Sleepy Hollow and the Alice in Wonderland suites.

Danny Elfman revealed the full extent of his talent as a composer, singer and songwriter when he went on stage to perform several of the songs he wrote for the character of Jack in The Nightmare Before Christmas. His stunning performance was acclaimed by a very enthusiastic audience, which was left speechless for a moment – Mr Elfman received two standing ovations!

On the overall, the concert turned out to be an exciting journey, showcasing Danny Elfman’s musical talents, but also Tim Burton’s visual talents as a filmmaker and an artist. During each suite, visual montages of Mr Burton’s original drawings and clips from his movies were shown on the screen. Throughout the concert, the public could see how much Elfman and Burton’s respective works are intimately connected – both extravagant, inventive, gothic and poetic.
