Following last year’s wonderful celebration of James Newton Howard’s oeuvre, the prestigious Vienna Concert Hall once again was transformed into a magical place last week, merging the musical history of Vienna with modern Hollywood. The Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA and César winning composer Alexandre Desplat was honored by the City of Vienna with the Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award during the 2016 Hollywood in Vienna gala concert.
The evening honored the greatest sci-fi compositions in the first half, followed by Alexandre Desplat accepting the Max Steiner Award from Norbert Kettner, CEO Vienna Tourism Board and Representative of the City of Vienna in the second half. Alexandre Desplat expressed his love and admiration for Vienna and its musical history and most of all for his wife, Dominique Lemmonier, “the person who inspires me the most”.

Director Wes Anderson recorded a special video greeting for Alexandre Desplat congratulating him on this special award, highlighting the importance of receiving such honors from the cultural city that inspired him for the making of “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.
The ORF Radio-Symphonieorchestra Vienna, conducted by Keith Lockart took the audience on an musical journey, called “The Wondrous World of Alexandre Desplat”, performing some of Alexandre Desplat’s most iconic pieces, including “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, “The Imitation Game”, “Argo”, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows”, “The Kings Speech” and more. As founder Sandra Tomek told us last year in an extensive interview, it was a lot of work to bring Hollywood in Vienna to life in the very first place as nobody believed in the idea ten years ago. Therefore it is now really great to see how many sponsors believe in the importance of film music: Almost 20 different partners supported Hollywood in Vienna this year, including the City of Vienna itself, Vienna Tourism as it seems to see how important film music can be for a cultural place like Vienna, the prestigious Vienna Symphonic Library, the Vienna Film Commission, the TV channel ORF 3 as well as many different industry partners reaching from BMW to the Hotel Imperial and Chopard. It is really great to see such a big support being provided for us to enjoy our favourite film scores live!
