Gears of War 4 – Behind the Scenes with Ramin Djawadi

Short review of Ramin Djawadi’s ‘Gears of War 4’ soundtrack

You can listen to the official soundtrack for Gears of War 4 below.

I wouldn’t say Ramin Djawadi’s soundtrack for Gears of War 4 ranks amongst my absolute favourite scores, personally, but I definitely do enjoy major parts of it without having played the game. I really like the atmosphere tracks like Almost Midnight or At the Doorstep create, which are more sound design and soundscape oriented. Cathedral of Pods then again is a menacing track that fits really well in the middle of the album, the vocals followed by the alarming strings in the second half of the track fit really well together. I also bet that the steadily forward pushing action tracks which amount to the majority of the soundtrack, enhance the gameplay itself really well.

Pieces like Recovery and Finale thus have a really strong impact because they evoke instantly a feeling of contemplation in a setting that is heavily based on battle. Recovery is definitely my favourite track on the album as it develops so nicely from the overall dark action feeling of the score to a very personal mood that grabs you right at where your heart should be. Finale then picks up where Recovery ends and develops it a bit further in an equally elegant way.

Overall, without having played the game, something seems to be missing, though, which might be another hint on it fitting ingame really nicely as most of its tracks shouldn’t distract too much from the actual gameplay but still support it in a good way.

You can find out more about the music being featured throughout Gears of War 4’s Official Launch Trailer in our Trailer Music Placements recap of September.
