The Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) names Diane Warren (songwriter) and Thomas Newman (composer) as the newest SCL Ambassadors. SCL honored Ambassadors include Lalo Schifrin, Hal David, James Newton Howard, Dave Grusin, The Sherman Brothers, Elliot Goldenthal, Burt Bacharach, Leiber and Stoller, Mark Isham and Randy Newman.

The SCL Ambassador Program was established to revere the elite group of screen composers, lyricists and songwriters whose contributions have made a significant impact in music for film, television, and video games. The talent showcased by these individuals has set the standard for music in visual media and they are leading representatives of their craft.

About composer Thomas Newman

Thomas Newman has earned a reputation as a trend-setter in musical composition. He has composed music for over five dozen feature films, 13 of which received Academy Award nominations. The motion pictures that have brought him Academy Award nominations include The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, Finding Nemo, WALL-E and more. Other accolades include winning three Golden Globes, two BAFTA’s, one Emmy and six Grammys. Thomas Newman earned two Grammy Awards for the renowned television series Six Feet Under. Additionally, his critically-acclaimed score for the epic miniseries Angels in America earned him a Grammy nomination. He has worked with renowned directors including Sam Mendes (Spectre), Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies), Steven Soderbergh (Side Effects), Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) and Jon Avnet (Fried Green Tomatoes). Outside his work as a screen composer, Newman has composed for the concert stage. His latest concert piece was a chamber work titled “It Got Dark,” commissioned by the acclaimed Kronos Quartet, as part of a separate commission by the esteemed Los Angeles Philharmonic. The work was expanded and adapted for symphony orchestra and string quartet, and premiered at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
