Following our previous monthly placement recaps, let us have a look at the music in September’s trailers!
‘Miss Sloane’ Trailer Music feat. Keaton Simons
If you don’t watch ‘Suits’ you probably have wondered where the prominent deep OHs come from in the Official Trailer for Miss Sloane. Keaton Simons‘ When I Go (listen here) is featured pretty much entirely from beginning till end. The song became popular after its usage in Episode 10 of Season 5 of tv series ‘Suits’.
‘Nocturnal Animals’ feat. Ludovico Einaudi
The first Official Trailer for Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals used Ludovico Einaudi‘s Logos to evoke quite an unsettling feeling, supporting the trailer’s disturbing storytelling. You can watch a live performance of the piece here. It is part of the album ELEMENTS which is available on iTunes.
‘Collateral Beauty’ Trailer Music feat. Thomas Bergersen
Published by Extreme Music, it was only a matter of time until we would hear Thomas Bergersen‘s music again in a trailer. It is featured from 0:51 till the end in the very moving first Official Trailer for David Frankel’s Collateral Beauty You can listen to the wonderful piece online and purchase Thomas Bergersen’s album ILLUSION’s via iTunes.
‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’ feat. The Zombies, Glory Oath + Blood and Brand X Music
Scored by The Newton Brothers, Ouija: Origin of Evil is ready to scare you again with a creepy little girl telling you about how it feels like to be strangled to death – I bet you’ve always wanted to know that! The second Official Trailer features the classic Time of the Season (listen here) by The Zombies, the album ODESSEY AND ORACLE is available on iTunes. You can also hear They Are Here from Glory Oath + Blood‘s DEADTONE‘s album as well as Brand X Music‘s Degraded from their TERROR LAB series (listen here).
‘The Promise’ Trailer Music feat. Jo Blankenburg
Set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire as well as the Armenian Genocide, The Promise follows a love triangle between a brilliant medical student (Oscar Isaac), the beautiful and sophisticated Ana (Angela Sarafyan) and renowned American journalist Chris (Christian Bale). You can hear Jo Blankenburg‘s Renascence KALEIDOSCOPE in the first 50 seconds of the trailer.
‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ Trailer Music feat. Confidential Music

‘Passengers’ Trailer Music feat. HUMANS and Superhuman
The upcoming space rom-com The Passengers features Gotta Go Home by HUMANS in the beginning (listen here). You can purchase the album via Bandcamp. From there on you can hear – what a coincidence – Superhuman‘s 1982 (listen here), published by Pusher Music.
‘Desierto’ Trailer Music feat. Attila Ats
The second Official Trailer for Jonas Cuaron’s Desierto which is a highly controversial film these days (“This movie looks like a Trump supporters wet dream.” as a Youtube comment says). It features Attila Ats‘ ZillGoda from 0:21 till 0:54, published by Really Slow Motion on their GIANT TOOLS – SYNTHETIC VOL.1 album.
‘Live By Night’ Trailer Music feat. Hozier
“Powerful men don’t have to be cruel” – written and directed by Ben Affleck, he also stars once again as the protagonist in Live By Night. In the pretty gloomy Official Teaser Trailer, you can hear Hozier‘s Arsonist’s Lullabye (listen here) from their HOZIER album from 1:00 till the end. The first cue is also really powerful, so please tell us in the comments if you know which one it is.
‘Free Fire’ Trailer Music feat. Ted Nugent
Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire looks as good as it will be hard to understand, not only because of the accents but also because of the actual story. But maybe there isn’t any story at all. Anyway, since the film takes place in 1978 it was definitely a good choice to include Ted Nugent‘s Free for All (watch live here) from 1:07 till the end.
‘Gold’ Trailer Music feat. Styx
In Stephen Gaghan’s Gold you follow Matthew McConaughey to Indonesia who is trying to find Gold in Indonesia. Looking like a mix of Johnny Depp’s personification of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger in Black Mass and Christian Bale’s Irving Rosenfeld in American Hustle, he lives through a similar success story like Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’. The pretty fast-pasted first Official Trailer is set to Styx‘s Renegade from their triple-platinum PIECES OF EIGHT album.
‘Bastards’ Trailer Music feat. The Heavy and The Unknown
In the official trailer for Bastards, which looks like your typical Owen Wilson movie, you can hear The Heavy‘s Don’t Say Nothing (THE GLORIOUS DEAD) from 0:29 – 0:50. Towards the end you can hear The Unknown‘s Are You Ready For Me (listen here) which was already part of the Official ‘2 Guns’ Soundtrack in 2013.
‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered’ Trailer Music feat. Ninja Tracks
In the Launch Trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered you can hear the trailer track that was also featured back then when it first came out: Kaveh Cohen & Michael David Nielsen’s Good Way to Die (listen here). Back then working as Full Tilt, the composer duo is now known as Ninja Tracks. Custom Sound Design was added to the new trailer by Source Sound.
‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ Trailer Music feat. Ciaran Birch
Heavy hitting publisher Really Slow Motion was back in action in the Official “Legacy” Trailer for Underworld: Blood Wars from 0:00 to 0:06 and from 0:36 to 0:50. Composed by Ciaran Birch, the cue Phagocyte (listen hear) was published on Really Slow Motion’s album EJECT 4.
‘Jack Reacher’ Trailer Music feat. Imagine Dragons
From 0:15 can you hear Imagine Dragon‘s I’m So Sorry throughout the Official IMAX trailer for Jack Reacher. The track appears on the Smoke + Mirrors album and sounds just like the music Jack would listen to in his spare time.
‘Moana’ Trailer Music feat. Te Vaka
In the Official Trailer for Moana you can hear Te Vaka’s incredibly happy Logo Te Pate (HAVILI) from 0:28 till the end. Based in New Zealand and rooted in Polynesian musical traditions, it really fits the colourful world of Moana.
‘Gears of War 4’ Trailer Music feat. Lissie/Metallica and Source Sound
Another good month for female vocal covers! In the Launch Trailer for Gears of War 4 you can hear Lissie’s cover of Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters (listen here). Custom Sound Design and Mix were provided by the folks from Source Sound.
‘Forza Horizon 3’ Trailer Music feat. Tom Swoon, Belle Humble & Dank and Source Sound
Starting off very quietly and then kicking in when the cars go to high speed, you can hear Tom Swoon, Belle Humble & Dank’s Phoenix (We Rise) (listen here) in Forza Horizon 3‘s Official Launch Trailer. Sound design, mix and music additions were once again provided by Source Sound.
‘Fist Fight’ Trailer Music feat. Carl Orff
We would love to know what Carl Orff would say about the usage of O Fortuna in the Official Trailer for Fist Fight.
20th Century Women Trailer Music feat. Talking Heads
Talking Heads’ The Big Country from their album MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD is featured from 1:06 in the Official Trailer for 20th Century Women which seems to quite entertaining. If you know the cue in the first part, tell us in the comments!
‘The Space Between Us’ Trailer Music feat. Kathryn Ostenberg and BANNERS
Kathryn Ostenberg’s Waves (iTunes) can be heard from the beginning till 1:17 in the second Offical Trailer for interplanetary teen romance The Space Between Us. At 1:43 it is then followed by BANNERS’ Shine A Light (listen here).
‘Trolls’ Trailer Music feat. Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick and Scott Miller
Fitting their explanations throughout the trailer as well as their Voice Over roles in the film itself, you can hear Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop the Feeling (listen here), followed by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick’s cover (listen here) of Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors (listen here) in the second Official Trailer for Trolls. The Hit House’s Scott Miller made enhancements from 1:56 till 2:11.
‘Paterson’ Trailer Music feat. SQÜRL(?)
We really like the trailer for Paterson but we can’t find the music. It might be by Jim Jarmusch’s band SQÜRL which will take care of the score again, just as it did for the great ‘Only Lovers Left Alife’ already. Maybe you know? Tell us in the comments!
