Sonya Belousova on M.F.A.
“There are two prominent elements featured in the score for M.F.A.. The first element is Francesca Eastwood’s phrases sampled from her dialogue. We played around with these phrases, treated them with various effects, processed and reversed them to create a “cacophony” of voices, a twisted inner dialogue in Noelle’s head. Noelle is changing, and so one word present throughout the whole score is “change”. You can find it almost in every cue, you don’t always hear it, but you subconsciously feel it. Another element is breathing. We recorded short breaths, long breaths, anxious breaths, violent breaths, relaxed breaths, you name it! You’re surrounded by this texture of voices and breathing that becomes an integral part of the score. These elements are complimented by peculiar and twisted sonorities created with various synthesizers to reflect Noelle’s state of mind.”
About Sonya Belousova & Giona Ostinelli
Variety calls the soundtrack for female-driven drama-thriller M.F.A., the Grand Jury Award nominee at the 2017 SXSW, “vividly unnerving” while The Hollywood Reporter states: “The effects-rich score by composers Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli… puts us in her head during intense scenes and starts allowing scraps of dialogue that challenge the morality of her judge-jury-executioner agenda.”
Ostinelli & Belousova have recently wrapped up Stephen King’s THE MIST TV series from The Weinstein Company starring Frances Conroy, Morgan Spector and Alyssa Sutherland. Movie Pilot lauded the soundtrack for THE MIST released by BMG Records as “a stroke of genius… the score played a pivotal role in bringing The Mist to life… Ostinelli & Belousova have crafted something very special here”, while the Film Music Critics Association described it as a “fascinating and addictive composition, a superb score on its own and one of the most affecting parts of the show in context. Once again Giona Ostinelli & Sonya Belousova deliver an exceptional composition. The Mist is a complex and complete score that you shouldn’t miss under any circumstances”.
Ostinelli & Belousova have written scores for a wide variety of projects ranging from films and TV series to theater, scored over 30 features that premiered at Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW and overall at over 120 film festivals, and have written music for TV series for Spike, HBO, Showtime, FOX, ABC, CBS, BBC and Nickelodeon. The score for breakout psychological thriller DARLING, released by fan favorite Mondo Records on vinyl and Lakeshore Records on CD & digital, has been described as “one the most innovative soundscapes of 2016” (Film Music Critics Association), “one of the most effective scores of recent times” (Dread Central), “one of the greatest, atonal and terrifying film scores” (Comingsoon.net), “fantastic” (IndieWire), “chilling” (The New York Post), “arresting and discordant” (The Hollywood Reporter). The score for Sundance & SXSW cult favorite CARNAGE PARK has been lauded by The New York Times as “a soundtrack alternating among ambient Lynchian strains and snatches of hard-core rock”, while AV Club stated: “CARNAGE PARK’s score is full of unnerving dissonance, fueling the sense of dread… But for all the off-kilter instrumentation and recording techniques, Ostinelli & Belousova always keep a notion of harmony and melody underneath the surface”.
Some of the duo’s other selected credits include quirky dramedy TWO-BIT WALTZ from executive producer Academy Award nominee David Mamet starring Academy Award nominees William H. Macy and David Paymer, premiered at Tribeca; drama THE BOAT BUILDER starring Christopher Lloyd and Jane Kaczmarek; thriller-horror INDIGENOUS from Kilburn Media, premiered at Tribeca; ballet THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA praised by Broadway World as “fantastic original score… The visuals, dance and music all come together to create something that will linger in the viewer’s mind for a long time”; multi-platinum Mario Frangoulis’ TALES OF CHRISTMAS album with the London Philharmonia arranged & orchestrated by Belousova & Ostinelli, featuring Grammy Award winning artists Sarah Brightman, Marilyn Horne, Jorge Calandrelli, as well as Belousova herself; a viral sensation PLAYER PIANO series executive produced by Stan Lee receiving a global acclaim with millions of views and shares online. “Terrific” (Forbes), “mind-blowing” (Entertainment Weekly), “galactic” (Mashable), “awesomely unique and masterful” (MTV), “wunderkind” (Tubefilter) – these are just some of the epithets used frequently by media worldwide.
